CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Bulldogs scored five runs in the first three innings capped by
Jake Gehri's third homer of the season in a 12-3 win over Richmond on Sunday afternoon.
Gehri, named Ivy League Player of the Week last Monday, launched a solo shot to left in the third after Yale scored twice in each of the first two innings. Gehri finished 2 for 4 with three runs scored, two stolen bases and a walk to headline Yale's 13-hit performance to close out play at the Swig and Swine Classic in South Carolina.
Mason LaPlante put Yale on the board with a triple in the first to score
Harry Hegeman, who leads the Bulldogs with 13 runs scored through nine games.
Teddy Hague followed to single home LaPlante to give Yale a 2-0 lead before Richmond came to the plate.
Carson Swank, the reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Week, gave Yale two more runs in the second with a single to score LaPlante and Hegeman. In the fifth, Yale scored three more times on bases loaded walks by
Dai Dai Otaka, Hegeman and LaPlante.
LaPlante went 2 for 3 with two runs scored, two walks and two stolen bases.
Grant Kipp made the lead stand and went the first five innings. Kipp, a sophomore, allowed one earned run, two hits and struck out seven to earn his first victory of his collegiate career.
In the sixth, Yale added two more runs on run-scoring singles from
Brian Ronai and
Cal Christofori. Ronai and Christofori both finished with two hits and two runs scored.
Matthew Erickson and
Tyler Sapsford both went two innings and each allowed an earned run.
The Bulldogs, who improved to 3-6 overall and 3-0 on Sundays, return to action with a game at Jacksonville University on Wednesday night beginning at 7 p.m.
