DENVER, Colo. -- Left-handed pitcher
Rohan Handa (Huntersville, N.C.) of the Yale baseball team was chosen by the San Francisco Giants with the 14th pick in the fifth round of the MLB Draft Monday. Handa, the first Ivy Leaguer taken in this year's draft, is the fourth-highest draft pick in Yale history. He went 146th overall.
Handa is the 37th Yale player drafted under
John Stuper, the former Major Leaguer who has coached the Bulldogs since 1992.
"Could not be happier for Rohan," said Stuper. "He is living proof of what hard work can do. I'll miss him as much as the person and teammate he is as I will his left arm. I think the Giants got an absolute steal in the fifth round. He has and will continue to make Yale Baseball proud."
Handa made a total of 20 appearances for the Bulldogs in two seasons (2019, 2020). In his sophomore season he appeared in four of the team's 10 games, allowing one earned run with one walk, eight hits allowed and one strikeout in five innings. In his first year he made 16 appearances, striking out 18 in 26.2 innings.
Handa pitched for the Mystic Schooners of the New England Collegiate Baseball League this summer. There, he posted a 0.52 ERA with 25 strikeouts, eight walks and nine hits allowed in 17.0 innings. Opponents hit just .153 against him.
Handa is a graduate of Cannon School, where he was Team MVP and three-time second team all-conference. He earned a gold medal playing for USA Baseball's 15u team at the Pan Am Games in Mexico.
Yale's highest draft pick ever was
Ron Darling '82, who went ninth overall to the Texas Rangers in 1981.
Dan Lock '95 went 51st overall as a second-round pick by the Houston Astros in the 1994 draft, and
Jon Steitz '02 went 88th overall as a third-round pick by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2001.
The Bulldogs currently have three former players playing Minor League Baseball. Catcher
Ryan Lavarnway '09 is with Columbus, the Cleveland Indians' Triple-A affiliate. Infielder
Simon Whiteman' 19 is at Richmond, the Giants Double-A affiliate. Left-handed pitcher
Kumar Nambiar '19 is at Stockton, the Oakland A's Low-A affiliate.
