PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Gymnastics East Conference announced the winners of its six major end of season awards on Saturday night following the conclusion of its inaugural championship meet at Brown. The Yale gymnastics team had four honorees: senior
Lindsay Chia (Windsor, Ont.) was named Gymnast of the Year, interim head coach
Andy Leis was named Head Coach of the Year, assistant coach
Morgan Ross was named Assistant Coach of the Year and sophomore
Sherry Wang (Austin, Texas) was named co-Newcomer of the Year.
Chia has competed in the all-around in every meet this season and has posted season highs of 9.850 on vault and 9.875 on beam, with both marks tying for second all-time in Yale program history. She has also posted a season high of 9.825 on bars and a career-best 9.875 on floor. Her all-around season high is 39.275. She entered the GEC Championship ranked first in the conference on vault and all-around, second on beam and tied for second on floor. At the Championship she won the all-around competition (39.275) and tied for fifth on vault (9.800), tied for sixth on beam (9.825), tied for eighth on floor (9.850) and tied for 19th on bars (9.800).
Chia was named the GEC Gymnast of the Week three times during the season and was a first team All-GEC selection on vault, beam, floor and all-around.
Taking over as the team's interim head coach in August 2021 after the passing of legendary head coach Barbara Tonry, Leis hired Ross and the two led the Bulldogs to the Ivy Classic title in March with a score of 195.05, the third-highest score in program history. The Bulldogs ranked second in the GEC in the regular season. Ross has handled all of the team's choreography.
A solid contributor on three events this season, Wang has posted season highs of 9.775 on vault, 9.850 on floor and 9.875 on bars -- an event she has won four times. She was first team All-GEC on bars. Wang shared the Newcomer of the Year Award with Cornell's Sydney Beers.
Yale placed fourth out of eight teams at the GEC Championship. The Bulldogs' score of 194.825 was their second-highest of the season.
