NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men's soccer team is set for another challenging weekend. The Bulldogs begin with a long trip to Morgantown, West Virginia, to meet a University of West Virginia squad ranked No. 10 in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer. Kickoff on Friday is slated for 7 p.m. at Dick Diesk Stadium. Yale then returns to the friendly confines of Reese Stadium on Sunday to host Villanova in a 5 p.m. kickoff. The Wildcats advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament a year ago.
Â
It's been a strong start to the season for the Bulldogs, who have opened with a pair of draws – 1-1 with Saint Francis and 2-2 at Rutgers. There also has been some frustration. Yale outshot the Red Flash 21-4 and had a 13-1 edge in corner kicks. Against Rutgers, the Bulldogs were four minutes away from a victory before the Scarlet Knights scored a late goal to earn the tie.
Â
Max Rogers, who came to Yale after playing the 2021 season at Fordham, has had a hand in two of Yale's three goals. His corner kick led to
TJ Presthus's tying goal against Saint Francis, and Rogers delivered a perfect free kick that
Eric Lagos headed in at Rutgers.
Â
Paolo Carroll also has a goal on the young season. It came on a penalty kick vs. Rutgers.
Â
Yale and West Virginia are playing for the first time.
Â
Yale and Villanova met last season in Philadelphia with the Wildcats escaping with a 2-1 win.
Â
SCOUTING WEST VIRGINIA
Â
The Mountaineers (2-2) are coming off a 4-1 win over American on Tuesday night. WVU scored three times in the first 14 minutes of the game. West Virginia's preseason No. 6 ranking by United Soccer Coaches was its highest to begin a year in program history. Additionally, the squad was picked to finish No. 1 in the Sun Belt Preseason Coaches' Poll. WVU is 115-42-22 at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium since the facility opened in 2004. That includes 8-0-3 last season, good for the first unbeaten, home campaign since 1995.
Â
SCOUTING VILLANOVA
Â
The Wildcats are 1-1-1 on the young season with their only loss coming 1-0 at Stanford, which is ranked No. 2 in this week's United Soccer Coaches national poll. Villanova is coming off a 4-0 victory over Northwestern on Labor Day. Lyam MacKinnon, who missed the team's season-opening trip to California due to injury, returned against Northwestern and scored a pair of goals. Villanova had a 12-win 2021 season that saw the Wildcats advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament before losing to Notre Dame.
