NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Bulldogs open the 2023 season at Richmond this weekend starting on Friday at 1:30 p.m. All three games can be streamed on ESPN+.
Here are some team notes entering the first weekend of the season:
- Brian Hamm became the 14th head coach of the Yale baseball program during the off-season and will be coaching his first regular season games this weekend. Hamm in 2022 led Eastern Connecticut State to the Division III National Championship and a 49-3 overall record. In January, Hamm was named ABCA National Coach of the Year.
- The Bulldogs, who have won Ivy League championships two of the last four seasons, finished 20-18 last season including wins at Auburn and Washington.
- Pitchers Mike Walsh and Grant Kipp signed with MLB teams following the 2022 season. Walsh was drafted in the 9th round by the Pirates, while Kipp signed with the Cubs.
- Yale returns Honorable Mention All-Ivy outfielder Jimmy Chatfield, who led team in most offensive categories and reached base in all 38 games.
- Senior Carson Swank was elected team captain for the 2023 season. Swank finished tied for second on the team with 27 RBI, including third on the team with 15 RBI in conference play.
- On the mound, Yale returns Colton Shaw, one of its primary starters who was second on the team with 10 starts, and two of its top relievers – righty Mark Capell and lefty Reid Easterly. Capell did not allow a run in 10.1 innings in conference play, and Easterly led the team with a 2.95 ERA in 36.2 innings.
Scouting Richmond
The Spiders, who were picked to finish third in the A-10 pre-season poll, went 0-3 at No. 20 Alabama to open the season last weekend. On Tuesday, Richmond lost 8-2 at William and Mary. Richmond returns most position players, including two A-10 All-Rookie honorees Jake Elbeery and D.J. Pacheco. Mikey Kluska leads the team with a .333 batting average (4 for 12) with a solo homer in the first four games.
