CRANSTON, R.I. — After a four month long offseason, the Yale coed sailing team will open its spring season this weekend at two regattas in Providence, R.I. and New London, Conn.
The team spent the off season recouping from a promising fall season with many lessons learned on and off the water and a training trip in St. Petersburg, Florida. This weekend, the Bulldogs will head to Brown University for the Sharpe Team Race and to Connecticut College for the Thames River Team Race.
The forecast for Saturday had strong winds, which canceled racing. The Bulldogs will instead only race on Sunday in a light shifty breeze. Low temperatures will add an additional layer of challenge, typical of early spring season regattas.
The spring season focuses primarily on team race events, with a few fleet races towards the end of the season. The coed team is returning all of its sailors who won the 2022 Team Race National Championship, with the exception of two - Shawn Harvey '22 and Sonia Lingos Utley '22. The remaining members of the team will look to the underclassmen to fill the spots of these graduated seniors. The team's depth chart has a number of promising underclassmen in their arsenal. Early season regattas will prove to be a great opportunity for the Bulldogs to get in practice before qualifiers later in the spring.
