NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Four members of the Yale baseball team were honored by the Ivy League as the league announced its annual awards on Thursday. Junior left-handed pitcher
Reid Easterly (Katy, Texas) was named first team All-Ivy League and senior outfielder
AJ Gaich (Medina, Ohio) and sophomore right-handed pitcher
Colton Shaw (Richardson, Texas) were named second team All-Ivy League. Senior outfielder
Ben Metzner (New York, N.Y.) was named Academic All-Ivy League.
Easterly moved from the bullpen into Yale's starting rotation and posted a 2.93 ERA, currently second in the league. His six wins are tied for second. In 73.2 innings he allowed only 60 hits, striking out 56. He ended the season with his longest outing of the year, a complete game at Harvard May 13 in which he allowed only six hits while helping the Bulldogs to a 5-2 win.
Easterly is a graduate of Cinco Ranch High School.
Gaich enjoyed the best season of his career, hitting .289 (second on the team) with a .386 slugging percentage and a .393 on-base percentage. He stole a league-best 19 bases and was caught stealing only twice. He was second on the Bulldogs in runs (26).
Gaich is a graduate of St. Ignatius High School.
Shaw has been a reliable member of Yale's rotation for each of the past two seasons while also totaling 186 at-bats in that span. This season he posted a 4.50 ERA, striking out 59 in 68.0 innings. He threw eight innings of shutout ball twice, at Brown Mar. 31 (with a season high 12 strikeouts) and at Penn Apr. 22 (limiting the Quakers to two hits).
Shaw is a graduate of Plano East High School.
Metzner, a history major, appeared in 70 career games, including 57 starts. He made 23 starts this season, playing errorless ball (38 chances). In 2022 he started 34 of 38 games, finishing fourth on the team in batting average (.277). He tied for second on the team in RBIs (27), doubles (eight) and on-base percentage (.396). He posted a .261 career batting average and a .366 career on-base percentage.
Metzner is a graduate of Horace Mann School.
