NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men's soccer team prepares to open the 2023 season with a pair of games over the Labor Day weekend. The Bulldogs host West Virginia University on Friday at 7 p.m. at Reese Stadium before traveling to Massachusetts on Monday afternoon to face UMass at 4 p.m.

Yale finished with a 7-4-5 record in 2022 including a 2-3-2 mark against Ivy League opponents. The Bulldogs ended the season in fifth place in the conference standings. This year, Yale was picked to finish fourth in the Ivy League Preseason Poll.

Moving Forward
Yale graduated several key members of last year's squad including four All-Ivy League selections: goaltender Elian Haddock, forward Paolo Carroll, midfielder Jules Oberg, and defender Jeremy Haddock. They will return an experienced roster including nine players that appeared in at least 10 games in 2022.

All-Ivy League second team honoree TJ Presthus started all 16 games last season and is expected to continue his stellar play as a top back line defender in the conference. Midfielder Max Rogers led the team with six assists last year and he will return as a facilitator for the Bulldogs' offense. Senior Chris Edwards will take over in goal for Haddock. Edwards started one game last season, recording a shutout in Yale's win over UMass Lowell. Eric Lagos and Quanah Brayboy will also play a big role in Yale's attack, returning with a combined 13 points a year ago. Defender Jake Schaffer was named team captain and he will factor into a strong defensive unit.

Welcome to Yale
The Bulldogs welcome six newcomers to the team this season: Simon Adjakple, Joseph Farouz, Constantin Jung, Noah Leddel, Nick Miller and Ryder Mills.

Last Time Out
Yale has faced both West Virginia and UMass over the last couple of seasons. In 2022, the Bulldogs triumphed 2-1 over the Mountaineers, who were ranked No. 10 in the nation at the tiem, thanks to a game-winning goal by Rogers with only 2:22 left in the second half. Yale last played UMass in 2021, falling 1-0 to the Minutemen.

Scouting West Virginia
The Mountaineers have already played a pair of games this season, picking up emphatic win over California Baptist and Bucknell. West Virginia is led by forward Marcus Caldeira, who already has three goals so far. The Mountaineers have not conceded a single score this season.

Scouting UMass
UMass has started the season with a 1-0-1 record following a draw with Northeastern and a home win over Central Connecticut State University. Forward Alec Hughes has tallied all three of his team's goals.
