Lightweights Prepare for 102nd HYP

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – To close out the 2024 regular season, the Yale lightweight crew will clash with historic Ivy League rivals Harvard and Princeton in the 102nd HYP regatta. The three storied teams will converge Saturday at the Gilder Boathouse in Derby, Connecticut. The Y150 will muster in strength – fielding three eights and two fours – to defend its home Housatonic waters and vie for two Cups.

Racing Info:
  • The Goldthwait Cup, inaugurated in 1926 by Henry Kimball Prince, a former captain of the Harvard lightweight rowing team, commemorates his teammate Vincent Bowditch Goldthwait, who tragically died in a motorboat accident in 1922. The cup was made retroactive to 1922, and is bestowed upon the champion varsity eight crew each year, with exceptions during World War II (1943-1946) and the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2021).
  • Princeton currently holds the Cup, earned by way of a thriller in last year's HYP in Boston, where the Tigers edged the Yale varsity eight by four-tenths of a second.
  • No. 1 ranked Harvard is currently on a roll, having an unblemished record in the varsity eight thus far. The Crimson will be looking to seize the Goldthwait Cup for the first time since 2017.
  • The Tigers are also coming into the HYP moving well; their only loss in the varsity was handed to them by Penn last weekend, with the crews separated by less than half a second at the finish line.
  • The Bulldogs are returning to Derby after facing off against Dartmouth last Saturday in Hanover. While Yale came away with a win in the JV, the Blue will be looking to bounce back after falling to Dartmouth in the varsity contest for the Durand Cup.
  • The highly anticipated varsity eight race is bound to be a nailbiter, but spectators at Gilder should keep a close eye on all the races, for also at stake this weekend is the Vogel Cup. Named in honor of David H. Vogel '70, a former Yale oarsman and long-serving coach for both Yale's lightweight and heavyweight rowing teams, this Cup is awarded to the team with the highest overall finish. All four races will count towards the points calculation.
  • Though Yale tied Princeton last year in overall points, the Tigers took home the Vogel Cup due to their victory in the varsity.

Saturday morning's four-race slate can be livestreamed on ESPN+ (note: as of Apr. 26 the event is listed on ESPN's site as "Women's College Rowing vs. Harvard", but the stream will include the lightweight races vs. Harvard and Princeton), or here for international viewers.
