Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Brown

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale baseball team split a doubleheader with Brown on Saturday at Bush Field. After narrowly dropping the first game 11-9, the Bulldogs responded with a dominant 7-0 victory in the second half of the twin bill. Colton Shaw threw a complete game shutout to earn the win.

Yale now sports an overall record of 14-21 with a 8-9 mark in Ivy League play. They sit in fifth place in the conference with four Ivy games remaining. The top four teams in the standings will qualify for the conference tournament. Brown, who has been eliminated from postseason play, moved to 5-12 in the conference following the doubleheader.

Game 1 – Brown 11, Yale 9
How it Happened
  • Bottom 1st | Davis Hanson bunted home Jeff Pierantoni to give the Bulldogs the 1-0 lead.
  • Top 2nd | Brown exploded for five runs in the second highlighted by a ground-rule double by Mark Henshon.
  • Bottom 2nd | The Bulldogs got on back, scoring on a sac fly by Robert Ciulla.
  • Top 3rd | The Bears responded with a run of their own to increase the lead to 6-2.
  • Top 4th | Brown scored on a single by DJ Dillehay.
  • Bottom 4th | Yale cut into the lead on a single by Garrett Larsen.
  • Bottom 5th | The Bulldogs continued to chip away at the lead, scoring two in the fifth. After scoring one on an error, Tommy Martin bunted home Jake Williams. Yale trailed 7-5 after five.
  • Top 7th | Brown added two major insurance runs to regain the four-run advantage.
  • Bottom 7th | With the bases loaded and two outs, Ciulla poked a single to center scoring two Bulldogs.
  • Top 8th | For the second straight inning, Brown tacks on two insurance runs to keep the Bulldogs at bay.
Game Notes
  • Reid Easterly started on the mound for Yale. The lefty battled all day, throwing 6.2 innings while allowing four earned runs.
  • Larsen recorded the first three-hit game of his collegiate career.
  • Ciulla drove in a career-high three runs.
  • Pierantoni knocked in two runs. He is tied for third on the team with 13 RBIs this season.
Game 2 – Yale 7, Brown 0
How it Happened
  • Bottom 1st | The Bulldogs tallied three runs in the first to take the early lead. Hanson lined a single to left to score a run. Yale then scored on a pass ball and an RBI single by Alec Atkinson.
  • Bottom 3rd | Yale picked up another run on an RBI bunt by Jake Williams.
  • Bottom 4th | The Bulldogs extend their lead to 5-0 on an RBI single from Max Imhoff.
  • Bottom 6th | Larsen crushed a two-run homer to left to make it 7-0 Bulldogs through six.
Game Notes
  • Shaw tossed his first career complete game shutout with a dominant performance. The junior allowed five hits while striking out seven. 
  • Larsen hit his second home run of the season and concluded the doubleheader with four total hits.
  • Hanson knocked in his 29th run of the season and leads the team in that category.
