PRINCETON, N.J. -- Five members of the Yale baseball team were honored by the Ivy League as the league announced its annual awards on Thursday. Starting pitcher
Colton Shaw, shortstop
Jeff Pierantoni, first baseman
Alec Atkinson and relief pitcher
Tate Evans were named to the second team while third baseman
Davis Hanson earned honorable mention honors. Pierantoni also received academic All-Ivy accolades.
Shaw was a top starter on the Bulldogs this season, pitching to a 4.26 ERA overall. The junior won conference pitcher of the week honors twice this season and wrapped up a fantastic campaign in which he finished eighth in the conference against Ivy League opponents with a 3.75 ERA. He also finished in the top five in wins, innings pitched, and strikeouts. The junior was also the only pitcher in the conference to throw a complete game shutout, which he did against Brown on April 27.
Pierantoni was a stalwart in the middle infield and the Bulldogs' lead off hitter for the majority of the season. Pierantoni finished with a .277 batting average, three home runs and 20 RBI. He led the team in runs scored with 33 and stole 13 bases which was the fourth-highest total in the Ivy League. The shortstop also was a great performer in the classroom, earning academic All-Ivy honors with a 3.71 GPA.
Atkinson manned first base for the Bulldogs and was a standout at the plate, in the field, and on the bases. Atkinson was second in the league, swiping 19 bases in 22 attempts. He led the team with a .338 batting average and was top-three in doubles, RBI, and runs scored.
Evans was a force out of the bullpen for Yale, locking down the late innings on several occasions. Evans pitched to a team-best 2.92 ERA and led the Bulldogs with four wins and six saves. The sophomore was able to develop his swing-and-miss repertoire striking out 55 batters in 37 innings.
Hanson was a highly impactful middle of the order bat and was a great defender at the hot corner for the Bulldogs. The junior led the team with nine home runs and 34 RBI and had a fantastic OPS of .946.
All five Bulldogs will be eligible to return next season.
