MEDFORD, Mass. -- The Yale sailing women's team clinched the NEISA Women's Team Race Championship (Legler Trophy) at Tufts this weekend.
Upper Mystic Lake provided shifty conditions, as usual, over the weekend. On Saturday, the breeze teetered between the north and west, ranging from 10 to 20 knots in the morning and shifting further west as the day progressed. One full round robin of the 10 teams was completed on Saturday. On Sunday, the breeze was light and barely sailable, causing many races to be abandoned throughout the day. By the afternoon, the wind was strong enough to complete a round of racing for the top eight teams, followed by a final four. The Bulldogs won the regatta with a 15-4 record. Skippers Carly Kieding, Dorothy Mendelblatt, and Elle Sykes competed with crews Sarah Moeder, Julia Miller, Clara Diaz Suarez, and Carmen Berg.
The coed squad competed in the Thompson Trophy, hosted by the United States Coast Guard Academy. On Saturday, the breeze was puffy and shifty out of the northwest, ranging from 6 to 25 knots. On Sunday, the wind was light in the morning and eventually filled in from the south between 7 and 14 knots. One full round robin of the 16 teams was completed throughout the two days of racing. Yale finished in 11th with a 5-10 record. Skippers Alexander Adams, Mathias Reimer, and Morgan Pinckney raced with crews Ella Benedetto, Ashley Highland, Margaret Ratzan, and Annabel Woodworth.
Next weekend wraps up the spring season for the Bulldogs before nationals begin at the end of April. The team has several fleet race regattas on its schedule, including the Open NE Fleet Race Championships at Brown, the Women's NE Fleet Race Championships at the United States Coast Guard Academy, the Morris Trophy at Boston University, and the Boston Dinghy Cup co-hosted by Harvard and MIT.
