NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Yale women's and coed sailing teams had another outstanding weekend, winning its conference championship and an inter-conference regatta.
The women's team won the NEISA Women's Team Race Championship, the Legler Trophy, continuing their undefeated streak. The team won all 17 races, the majority in an impressive 1-2 and 1-3 finishing combination. Saturday was a breezy day sailing at Brown, with the blowing from the Northeast consistently between 8-12 knots and puffs up to 22 knots. On Sunday, the breeze was slightly lighter than Saturday and shifted to the North-northwest. Skippers Mia Nicolosi, Carmen Cowles, and Emma Cowles competed with crews Ximena Escobar, Carmen Berg, Julia Miller, Audrey Foley, and Jessi Avila-Shah. As a result of the conference championship victory, the Bulldogs have earned an automatic berth to the team race national championships later this month.
The coed team won the Thompson Trophy at Connecticut College. Saturday was a puffy and windy day on the Thames River. The wind came out of the North consistently in the high-teens with puffs in the mid-twenties knot range. On Sunday, the breeze died off a bit and shifted further west but still remained very puffy. Skippers Jack Egan, Stephan Baker, and Alex Adams raced with crews Nathan Sih, Elle Sykes, Ashley Highland, and Annabel Woodworth. The team finished with a 14/4 record.
In Boston, a coed team fleet raced on Sunday in the Oberg Trophy. The wind came from the Northwest at the beginning of the day and shifted further east as the racing went on. It was a classic puffy and shifty day on the Charles River, ranging from 4 to 16 knots. Saturday racing was canceled due to inclement weather. Dorothy Mendelblatt and Ariana Borut placed fifth in A division, Mathias Reimer and Puiyee Kong placed third in B division, and Clara Díaz Suárez and Tom Commander placed 11th in C division. Each division was able to sail six races, landing the team in sixth place overall.
Next weekend, the teams will compete in the Open and Women's NEISA Fleet Race Championship at Brown, Yale and the Boston Dinghy Cup at Harvard/MIT. This weekend will be the last weekend of racing before the Team Race and Fleet Race Nationals, which begin on April 24th.
