Bulldogs Wrap Up Competition at Heps

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The Yale men's track and field team closed out the Ivy League Heps Championships Sunday at Cuyler Athletic Complex and Dwyer Track, Frank Field. The weekend was marked by numerous PRs, and junior Owen Karas had Yale's best finish by taking second in the 1500m finals Sunday. The Bulldogs placed eighth with 23 points.

  • Sunday began with points from senior Winslow Atkeson in the steeplechase. His strong running and excellent hurdling earned him fourth place. Classmate Jack Sendek also had a strong race to place ninth.
  • In the 1500 meters, Yale showcased its depth. Junior Owen Karas placed second in 3:43.44. Sophomore Brian Gamble also had a great race running 3:46.85. First-year Matthew Schutzbank earned himself a PR of 3:51.15.
  • Senior Kit Colson ran a solid 10.67 seconds in the 100-meter finals. Colson also competed in the 200-meter finals, where he ran 21.75 seconds.
  • First-year Max Bishop did well in a fast 800m race to run 1:50.57, placing sixth overall and securing a point for the Bulldogs.
  • In the field, junior Nolan Recker and sophomore Nathan Lebowitz threw in the discus. Lebowitz's best attempt came in the final round, where his mark of 52.14 meters placed him fifth and secured two points for the Bulldogs.
  • In the 5,000 meters, Karas returned and had an excellent last 800 to place fourth overall. Senior Leo Brewer fought well to just miss out on points, placing seventh.
  • The Bulldogs' all-senior 4x100 meter team of Cristian Pereira, James Grindle, Jacob Kao and Colson secured a point for the Bulldogs with their time of 41.12 seconds.
  • In the 4x800 meter relay, the team of sophomore Amaré Fields, senior Calvin Katz, Bishop and junior Braden King fought well to place fifth overall in a time of 7:30.65.
  • The final event of the day was the 4x400 meter relay, where sophomore Lucas Mylon, senior Simon Jupp, junior Andrew Farr and sophomore Finnegan Quinn all worked together well to run 3:14.58.
Up Next: 
  • The Bulldogs will head to the Princeton Elite meet taking place May 17 to chase down NCAA first-round marks. This will be the last opportunity for athletes to improve upon their performances to earn themselves a top 48 spot in the East Region to make it to the NCAA first round.
