The Bulldogs open the 2020 baseball season with a three-game series this weekend at The Citadel in Charleston, S.C.
Yale finished in third place with a 12-8 mark last season in the Ivy League after winning back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018. Last season, the Bulldogs won seven of their final eight Ivy League games.Â
Despite graduating four seniors who were selected in the MLB Draft, the Bulldogs return three All-Ivy selections -- senior
Alex Stiegler (first team), sophomore
Mason LaPlante (second team) and sophomore
Jake Gehri (honorable mention). Â
The Citadel (3-0) opened its season with a three-game sweep of Coppin State last weekend. In the season opener, left hander Shane Connolly allowed one run over seven innings with eight strikeouts and earned Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week. Â
Connolly is slated to oppose Stiegler on the mound in the series opener on Friday.Â
Additional notes heading into the weekend:
- The Bulldogs were picked to finish fourth in the preseason Ivy League media poll.Â
- Friday's game will be the earliest season opener in the 28-year career of Yale head coach John Stuper.
- The trip to Charleston, S.C., also marks the return where Coach Stuper started his pro playing career as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates organization.
- Zach Taglieri, a senior right-handed pitcher for The Citadel, is the great grandson son of Bert Kohlmann, who played for the Yale Baseball team in the 1930s.Â
