COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Two Yale baseball players will be back on the diamond starting tonight, as rising juniors
Jake Gehri and
Grant Kipp play in the Collegiate Summer Baseball Invitational. ESPN2 will have the event's debut with a doubleheader live starting at 7:00 p.m. Eastern. Gehri is starting at DH and Kipp is the starting pitcher for Team Freedom, whose game is scheduled to start at 10:00 p.m. Eastern.
The CSBI is an invitation-only, four-team regional formatted tournament that features rosters composed of players hand-picked by the CSBI coaching staffs. Players come from more than 70 Division I schools from across the country. The tournament includes two games per day through Saturday, when the championship takes place at 9:00 p.m. Eastern.Â
A native of Buckley, Wash., Gehri hit .286 with three homeruns and 12 RBIs in the shortened 2020 season. He was an honorable mention All-Ivy League selection last season, when he hit .309 with seven homeruns and 35 RBIs.
A native of Dallas, Texas, Kipp appeared in three games this season and recorded 13 strikeouts with a 3.18 ERA.
The CSBI has been coordinated with local health officials and includes full quarantining of everyone involved, with no fans in the stands for the games. All participants are in a local hotel for the entirety of the tournament, have been tested for COVID-19, and will be checked daily for any medical conditions. A portion of the retail price of each subscription to watch the tournament via pay-per-view will be donated to No Kid Hungry -- a national campaign run by Share Our Strength, a nonprofit working to solve problems of hunger and poverty in the United States and around the world.
