NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men's track and field team kicked off the new year in style at Coxe Cage Saturday. The Bulldogs faced off against Ivy League rivals Columbia and Dartmouth, setting the cage alight with new PRs and excellent tactical races in order to secure the team win. Yale finished with 84 points to Columbia's 44 and Dartmouth's 39.
The throwers started the day strong with
Matt Appel and
Nolan Recker placing first and second respectively in the hammer. Recker set a new PR of 19.23m. Appel returned for the shot put later, placing second.
In the long jump
Isiah Udofia jumped to new lengths -- with a PR of 7.23 coming in his final attempt -- to place second.
The distance group ripped around the cage taking numerous wins. Most notable was
Leo Brewer, who won the mile in 4:10. His exquisite tactics allowed him to outkick his competitors on the final lap to secure the win. Brewer was backed up by his teammates
Thomas Cirrito and
Kenan Pala, who placed third and fourth.
Owen Karas stormed to victory in the 800 meters, employing some evasive action to sit and kick to the win. In the 1k PRs came fast with
Winslow Atkeson placing second in 2:24.37.
Braden King had an excellent performance, setting a massive new PR of 2:25.90.
The men's 60 meters was perhaps a highlight of the day, with the Bulldogs sweeping first to fourth.
Kit Colson was on fire, running a new PR of 6.87 to win.
Cristian Pereira placed second, with
Jacob Kao in third. In the 400 meters,
Colin Quinn set a big new PR of 48.49 to win the race, with
Aaron Miller coming in second. The Bulldogs swept the top three spots of the 200 meters. Colson
returned to win again in a time of 21.99, just breaking the illusive 22 second barrier.
The relays always provide an electric atmosphere and were kicked of with the men's 4x800m. It was a closely contested matchup with Yale teams going first and second. Ultimately it was the team comprised of
Amaré Fields, Pala,
Tanish Chettiar and
Austin Montini who brought it home. The men also won the 4x400 meters with a solid team of Kao,
Simon Jupp, Quinn and
Andrew Farr.

- The Bulldogs will next be in action at the River Hawk Invitational next weekend. This will be their first time away from Coxe Cage this year, as they head up to Boston to run on the TRACK at new balance.
