Calvin Hill ‘69 is a Yale legend, combining a celebrated undergraduate football career with notable performances in varsity track and field. During Yale’s 1968 Ivy League football championship season, Hill led the team in rushing and scoring, was second in pass receptions, won a place on the All-Ivy and All-East teams, and earned an All-American honorable mention. As a freshman in track and field, he set Yale records in both the long jump and the triple jump. In his sophomore year he won the Indoor Heptagonals and the IC4A in the long jump, and the Outdoor Heptagonals in both the long and triple jumps - a feat he repeated in his junior year.

In 1969, playing professional football for the Dallas Cowboys, Hill received the National Football League’s Rookie of the Year Award. He later played for the Washington Redskins and Cleveland Browns, participating in two Super Bowls and four Pro Bowls while also attending classes at the Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University.

Hill retired from football in 1981 and launched a new career as a consultant and special assistant to organizations and individuals dealing with drug and alcohol problems, mental health, and psychiatric treatment issues.

While a member of the Dallas Cowboys, Hill lent his name and support to New Haven’s Calvin Hill Day Care Center, which still bears his name. He has held directorships on the President’s Council on Physical Fitness, the Rand Corporation, the Drug Policy Institute, the NCAA Foundation, the National Park Service, and the March of Dimes. He has also served on the Yale University Council and the Yale Development Board.
