Kenney was a member of Merrill Lynch’s Executive Management Committee for 24 years and it’s Board of Directors for eight years. In the early 1980’s, he was named CEO of Merrill's fledgling institutional and investment banking business with the goal of building it into a major industry competitor. By the mid ‘90’s, through organic growth in acquisitions, Merrill had become the largest Fixed Income and Equities firm and Investment Banking fundraiser worldwide.  He became head of Corporate Strategy, Business Development and Research working with top management to globalize all of Merrill‘s major businesses. In 2002, he was named Vice Chairman of Merrill responsible for major client relationships, particularly financial institutions. In 2006 he recommended the sale of ML Investment Management to BlackRock in return for a 49.9% ownership stake. And in 2008, he joined BlackRock as MD and senior advisor to executive management on corporate strategy.

In 2009, Yale Athletics dedicated the Kenney Center, a three-story addition to the Yale Bowl. This facility has transformed the entrance to the storied home of Yale football and includes a team meeting room, an alumni gathering space and a terrace which offers unmatched views of the Yale athletic complex.

Kenney is a Trustee of Northwestern University and the Nightingale-Bamford School, an Advisory Director of the Kellogg School of Management and Yale School of Management and the Yale Center of Dyslexia and Creativity. He is also a member of the Board of Directors for the Och-Ziff Capital Management and IntelligentMDx and is a former Director of Freddie Mac, Investo, The American Stock Exchange, the Metropolitan Opera and the Advisory Board of Stanford Business School.
