George H.W. Bush Lifetime of Leadership Award
Lorraine Pratte Lewis was a two-time team MVP and 1977 Yale field hockey captain. She played on Yale's first varsity women's lacrosse team in 1976 and on the 1978 squad that competed in the inaugural national championship tournament, finishing fifth in the nation.
Â
Lewis remains active in the sport as a trustee and secretary of the USA Field Hockey Foundation and a member of the USA Masters Governance Committee. She coaches a public high school team in Washington, D.C., and leads the Yale Field Hockey Association, where she fundraises, engages alumnae, and supports its mentoring program—while mentoring current Yale student-athletes. She also helps organize Alumnae Weekend, Fête gatherings, and anniversary celebrations, and proudly marked the opening of the field house named for her teammate, Carol McPhillips Roberts '81. In 2022, Yale recognized her contributions to the program by naming the videoboard at Johnson Field in her honor.
Â
Lewis competes internationally in FIH Masters tournaments, representing the USA at the World Cup three times alongside her longtime teammate Anne Keating '77. She earned a 2022 O65 bronze medal in South Africa and was a 2023 O60 bronze medalist at the Pan American Championship in Argentina. Â
Â
From 2003 to 2025, Lewis served as Executive Director of the UMWA Health and Retirement Funds, providing pensions and health care for approximately 90,000 retired coal miners and their dependents, primarily in Appalachian communities. Â
Â
A 1981 graduate of Harvard Law School, she began her 18-year public service career at NLRB before serving as Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Education and General Counsel of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. On the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee, Lewis held Counsel and General Counsel roles under Chairman John Glenn, focusing on federal agency oversight and civil service merit system compliance. Her legislative work contributed to the Civil Liberties Act, Hatch Act Reform Amendments, and Inspector General Act Amendments.  Â
Â
Lewis supports The Ohio State University students in the Washington Academic Internship Program, founded by Senator John Glenn, in two meaningful ways. An OSU alumni endowment, created with help from his former staff, assists with housing costs, while Lewis provides mentorship that continues well beyond the end of each internship.
