George H.W. Bush Lifetime of Leadership Award
Lisa Brummel, ‘81, distributed her energy over a wide area of undergraduate sports; this energy allowed her to lead the distribution efforts of one of the largest and best known companies. She was captain of the women’s basketball team in 1981 and was voted MVP four times in that sport. Each year she made the transition from the basketball court to the softball field, where she was elected captain in 1979-1980 and 1980-1981 and was designated MVP three times. On the volleyball team she was chosen the most improved player. In her spare time, she medaled in outdoor track and field at Heptagonal Championships. These competitive achievements did not keep her from earning an Honorable Mention Academic All-American. After Yale, she went on to earn her M.B.A. at UCLA.
Brummel’s postgraduate career began with the publishing from Prentice-Hall, Inc., where she became a regional manager before moving to Microsoft as a product unit manager responsible for the marketing of Microsoft consumer software products. Several other management positions led to Brummel’s appointment as corporate vice president for the home and retail division, where she managed all product development operations, and global strategy for Microsoft’s line of consumer products. Her responsibilities at Microsoft marshal the efforts of 1,200 people and generate $1.2 billion of revenue earned in 30 countries.
Brummel did not lose sight of community needs. She is a founding member of Women’s Sports Injury Research at the University of Washington and has served as a board member of the Washington Academy of Performing Arts, among other nonprofit enterprises devoted to social and political advocacy.
