George H.W. Bush Lifetime of Leadership Award
W. James McNerney, Jr., has served several of the world’s largest corporations at the highest levels of management. A two-sport athlete at Yale, he was a three-time letter winner in baseball and played varsity ice hockey. He earned his M.B.A. from Harvard in 1975.
Since 2005, Mcnerney has served as chairman of the board, president, and CEO of the Boeing Company, the world’s largest manufacturer of commercial jetliners and military aircraft. He came to Boeing from the position of chairman of the board and CEO of 3M, a global technology and consumer products company. McNerney joined 3M in 2001 after nineteen years at the General Electric Company, where he held top positions in five different divisions. Previously, he worked at McKinsey & Co., Inc. and Procter & Gamble, where he is still a member of the board of directors.
McNerney is chair of the U.S. - China Business Council and The Business Council, and serves on the Business Roundtable and the American Society of Corporate Executives. He is a trustee of Northwestern University and a member of the Field Museum board of trustees in Chicago.
