George H.W. Bush Lifetime of Leadership Award
Nicholas F. Brady ‘52 served at the highest level of government, the private sector, and for Yale University. He captained the 1952 Yale squash team, which was ranked first in the nation. Earning an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School in 1954. Brady joined the New York investment banking firm of Dillon, Read & Company, and in 1974 he became the chairman of the board. In 1982 Brady was appointed to the U.S. Senate to complete an unexpired term.
In 1987, following that year’s stock market crash, President Ronald Reagan asked Brady to serve as a chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Market Mechanisms, also called the Brady Commission. He later served on three other Presidential councils; the Scowcroft Commission on Strategic Forces, the Kissinger Commission on Central America, and the Packard Commission on Defense Management. In 1988 Brady was appointed Secretary of the Treasury by President Ronald Reagan and remained in the post under President George H.W. Bush, ‘48 until 1993.
Returning to the private sector, Brady became a director of the Amerada Hess Corporation, Christiana Companies, and the H. J. Heinz Company. He also served as a trustee of Rockefeller University and as a member of the board of the Economic Club of New York. Additionally, Brady served as chairman of Darby Advisors, Inc., and as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, Inc. He has served Yale as a member of the President’s Council on International Activities and is a Sterling Fellow. In 1999 the Payne Whitney Gymnasium squash center was named in Brady’s honor, ensuring his lasting presence as a part of Yale squash.
