Her Master's in journalism from Columbia University helped set the path to a pair of Emmy Awards (News & Documentaries) and a life of civic contribution. Mifflin has been an adjunct professor at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, a mentor to New York Times Scholarship and ScholarshipPlus students, and a volunteer coach and referee in AYSO Leagues. 

She's now the managing editor fo The Hechinger Report, the leading independent nonprofit newsroom focused on national education journalism. 

 
A. Mifflin was a Yale field hockey player who became a pioneer in women's athletics during her time on campus. She entered Yale as a freshman in the first year of coeducation, in 1969. Lawrie

As a co-founder of the field hockey team and its co-captain when it became a varsity sport in her senior year, Mifflin witnessed the progress and promise of Title IX - a law enacted during her junior year of college. She also covered other women's sports for the Yale Daily News. 

Mifflin was the first woman sports reporter at the New York Daily News, covering professional hockey, soccer, and Olympics, and is best known for her long (1982-2013) career with The New York Times.

At The Times, she also served as sportswriter, Deputy Sports Editor, a National Desk editor, a business reporter, executive director of television programming, and the co-creator of the paper's first web video department. In her role with the Television Enterprise Department, she supervised the production of documentaries based on Times reporting and oversaw all content for the Discovery Times Channel digital cable network, a joint venture of The Times and Discovery Communications.

Her impact with the Times also went beyond the newsroom; she created the Company's first work-life, office, helping develop policies to enable employees to balance the demands of a career with their personal lives. 

Mifflin won the 1998 NCAA Silver Anniversary Award, given annually to former NCAA student-athletes recognizing their collegiate and professional achievements.
