In celebration of Yale’s 2001 Tercentennial Yale Athletics established the ‘George H.W. Bush Lifetime of Leadership Award’ recognizing that the leadership, teamwork, discipline, and competitive drive fostered by undergraduate athletics often greatly influences postgraduate careers. There exists now a remarkable legacy of former Yale scholar-athletes who have gone on to distinguish themselves in public service, education, government, business, science and technology, and the arts.

As a Yale undergraduate George Hebert Walker Bush ‘48 played varsity baseball and served as a team captain. His illustrious professional career, which culminated in his becoming the 41st President of the United States, epitomized Yale’s pre-eminent intellectual and athletic standards of excellence. IN naming the award for him the University honors both President Bush’s accomplishments in sport and his selflessness and lifetime commitment to public service and the nation.

Recipients of the ‘George H.W. Bush Lifetime of Leadership Award’ are selected by a broadly representative alumni committee. The award is bestowed on graduates who are former Yale athletes and who have brought to their respective careers the kind of outstanding leadership, vision and striving for excellence that were so characteristic of their athletic endeavors here at Yale.
